Hi, I’m Brian! I’m a research assistant at Oregon State University with over 12 years of experience in marine and freshwater ecosystem science. My current work focuses on supporting various projects that investigate nearshore and open ocean physical processes, where I specialize as both a mooring and glider technician.
Glider Research Group - Slocum glider technician and pilot
LeConte microFloat Project - mooring lead
Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans - mooring lead
From 2017-2023 I worked in a biological oceanography lab, where I researched the physiology, ecology, and biochemistry of marine phytoplankton through both laboratory studies and remote sensing. I specialized in biological oceanography operations, accumulating over 150 days of at-sea research experience. My work included laboratory analyses to estimate phytoplankton carbon and extensive data analysis and visualization using Python and R. In 2023, I completed a master's degree, where I investigated the impact of marine viruses on the mortality of phytoplankton and bacteria, and how this influences the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients in the surface ocean.
From 2013-2017 I was a research assistant and crew leader in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at OSU studying the effects of riparian canopy structure on stream production, drought impacts to native fish and salamander populations, and nutrient dynamics in forested headwater streams.
